It is always new materials that open the door to new technologies, whether they are in civil, chemical, construction, nuclear, aeronautical, agricultural, mechanical, biomedical or electrical engineering. Materials science and engineering influences our lives each time we buy or use a new device, machine, or structure. Engineering materials refers to the group of materials that are used in the construction of manmade structures and components. The primary function of an engineering material is to withstand applied loading without breaking and without exhibiting excessive deflection. The major classifications of engineering materials include metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Materials are also an important part of forensic engineering and failure analysis – investigating materials, products, structures or components, which fail or do not function as intended, causing personal injury or damage to property. The intellectual origins of materials science stem from the enlightenment when researchers began to use analytical thinking from chemistry, physics, and engineering to understand ancient, phenomenological observations in metallurgy and mineralogy.
This book outlines the processes and applications of engineering materials in detail. It gives deep insights into the different concepts and methods used in this field. The important characteristics of the materials within each of these classes are discussed in this book. It explores emerging materials, peculiar materials, futuristic scope of plastics and applications of ceramics. It also deals with bio-composite materials, super hard materials, recent non-ferrous metals and alloys. Trinh Shively earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Technological University, Aichi. He is a Professor at University College, Bryansk. His research interests are in the fields of materials science, composite materials, stress analysis, and solid mechanics. Shively has authored numerous research papers, articles and is the editor of two journals. He has been a part of various international research projects funded by the government as well as universities.
