Every time we buy or use a new gadget, machine, or structure, materials science and engineering has an impact on our lives. The academic area of engineering materials is defined by an understanding that underpins every application of materials: the material's qualities determine its worth. A material may be chosen for a variety of reasons, including strength, electrical qualities, heat or corrosion resistance, and a variety of other factors, but they all relate to properties. New materials, whether in civil, chemical, construction, nuclear, aeronautical, agricultural, mechanical, biomedical, or electrical engineering, are always the catalysts for new technologies. Metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites are the four major categories of engineering materials. Materials scientists hope to better understand and develop materials by using thermodynamics and kinetics.

 This book attempts to understand the multiple branches that fall under the discipline of engineering materials and how such concepts have practical applications. It provides detailed information about structure of engineering materials, elastic behaviour, crystallinity, metals and alloys. It also deals with ceramics, composite materials, non-ferrous metals, steel and forming processes for metals. Some of the diverse topics covered in this book address the varied methodologies that comprise this subject. It presents this complex subject in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. This book is an essential guide for both graduates and post-graduates who wish to pursue engineering materials further.


Ardith Skelton is an Adjunct Professor at Public State University, Buenos Aires. He holds Ph.D. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, from Technology Institute, San Lorenzo. His areas of interest are in engineering materials, heat treatment, and alloy development. He has published many articles and research papers in various international journals. He has attended numerous scientific conferences and symposiums and has presented 7 papers.
