Manufacturing industries strive to reduce the cost of the product continuously to remain competitive in the face of global competition. In addition, there is the need to improve the quality and performance levels on a continuing basis. Another important requirement is on time delivery. In the context of global outsourcing and long supply chains cutting across several international borders, the task of continuously reducing delivery times is really an arduous task. Computer integrated manufacturing has several software tools to address the above needs. In straightforward terms, CIM is the technique of using computers to control an entire production process. It’s commonly used by factories to automate functions such as analysis, cost accounting, design, distribution, inventory control, planning and purchasing. CIM combines various technologies like computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to provide an error-free manufacturing process that reduces manual labour and automates repetitive tasks. It is widely used in the automotive, aviation, space and ship-building industries.



This book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of computer integrated manufacturing. It traces the progress of this field and highlights some of its key concepts and applications. It deals with automation system, production planning, and manufacturing system. It also explores simulation in manufacturing, CIM architecture, industrial robotics and control in CIM environment. Different approaches, evaluations and methodologies have been included in this book. Eleanora Jeter pursued her Ph.D. in Manufacturing Engineering Public Research University, Dunedin.  She is a Guest Lecturer at Technical Institute, Perth. She has contributed numerous articles and book chapters in the field of production management, computer integrated manufacturing, and flexible manufacturing systems. Jeter has also been an invited speaker at various international production management conferences.
