All machine tools have some means of constraining the workpiece and provide a guided movement of the parts of the machine. Thus, the relative movement between the workpiece and the cutting tool is controlled or constrained by the machine to at least some extent, rather than being entirely "offhand" or "freehand". Hand tools were used to cut and shape materials for the manufacturing of things such as cooking utensils, carriages, ships, furniture, and other products before the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. Material items were generated by power-driven devices that could only be manufactured by machine tools after the invention of the steam engine. With their inherent precision, machine tools enabled the economical production of interchangeable parts. Today machine tools are typically powered other than by human muscle (e.g., electrically, hydraulically, or via line shaft), used to make manufactured parts in various ways that include cutting or certain other kinds of deformation.

Conroy has been an eminent speaker in seminars across Europe, America, Canada and Middle Asia. He also won 10 awards and recognitions for his research and teaching service.
