Design is the initial step in the manufacturing process, and it is here that the majority of the key decisions that determine a product's final cost are made. It entails optimising a product's design for manufacturing and assembly, as well as combining the product's design needs with its manufacturing method. Although the principle is found in practically all engineering disciplines, but how it is implemented varies greatly depending on the manufacturing technique. The design will also have an impact on the fabrication of specialised tooling such as jigs, fixtures, dies, and other cutting equipment required to make items. Without attention during product development, the tooling may be unnecessarily complex. Achieving high-yielding designs, in the state of the art VLSI technology has become an extremely challenging task due to the miniaturisation as well as the complexity of leading-edge products.
This book is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of product design for manufacturing. It attempts to compile different aspects of design layout, producible component and dimensional measurements. The chapters also give details about inspection, functional gaging, functional workholding and fixturing. This book aims to serve as a resource guide for students and contribute to the growth of the discipline. The various sub-fields of product design along with technological progress that have future implications are glanced at in this book. The goal of this book is to provide the most up to date review on product design. Therefore, this book will equip academia and industry people with adequate knowledge in this field.
Aurelia Langdon pursued her Ph.D. in Industrial Design Engineering from Technological University, Stratford. She has served as a Visiting Professor at various universities across America and Europe. She has won several prizes for her enthusiasm in education and research. Langdon has contributed several articles and research papers on a range of subjects, from automotive materials selection to engineering education, design of plastics and metals.
